‘Tis the season...for me to have procrastinated on thinking about what to write about so you end up with something about Godzilla.
After Max finally put the last two Godzilla movies I hadn’t seen on streaming a couple weeks ago, I’ve officially watched every single canon Godzilla movie!
This means I now know which movies are perfect for your holiday viewing pleasure. These are my suggestions for which movie makes the most sense to watch for each of these holidays! (I only did holidays that I celebrate or feel comfortable poking fun at. Which means making fun of Christianity, mostly. I might add more later! Or feel free to make suggestions in the comments!)
Halloween: Terror of Mechagodzilla
Aside from being a Godzilla movie, this movie has a lot of classic horror movie elements - it’s like if every classic horror movie got together and genetically engineered a baby. There’s a mad scientist, a cyborg human, evil aliens, monsters, a “haunted” house, and overall creepy vibes on top of your normal kaiju fighting kaiju action.
Thanksgiving: Ebirah, Horror of the deep
Some men get in a boat and travel to a new land that seems uninhabited, but it’s not and the natives are not having a good time. That’s the real history of Thanksgiving in a nutshell, right? Of course, that’s a gross oversimplification of the plot and also the complex history behind this holiday.
That being said, this is actually one of my favorite Godzilla movies. Plus, there’s a scene where Godzilla and Ebirah fight with a boulder but it just looks like they’re playing catch, so you can get a little of your Thanksgiving sportsball fix here, too!
Christmas: Son of Godzilla
A virgin birth of a polarizing figure who has caused major divisions between many people all over the world? AND snow? This is 100% a Christmas movie. I will not be taking any questions at this time.
New Year’s Eve: Godzilla Minus One
Because it’s the day before the New Year…so it’s like the New Year…minus one…
Whatever, it’s a cinematic, Oscar-winning masterpiece. Everyone should watch this movie at any time.
Valentine’s Day: Godzilla vs Biollante
True love saves the day! Sort of?
An immortal rose created by a scientist who combined his dead lover and some of Godzilla’s cells in a plant saves the world (just Japan, again) from Godzilla!
Could also be a good one for Arbor Day.
Easter: Godzilla Raids Again
Godzilla’s original resurrection!
Ok, technically in the movie it’s a different Godzilla but only if you pay close attention and aren’t doom scrolling on your phone when you watch it.
This movie also features one of my favorite sequences in the franchise. They make a big deal about Godzilla being attracted by the lights of the city. So they put the city in a blackout, and it works. So, Godzilla is about to go back into the ocean. Then we end up (for unclear reasons) following several slapstick scenes of these prisoners who escape from a police van and then accidentally crash it into a power plant…which then catches on fire…which gets the attention of Godzilla, who immediately turns around and chaos ensues.
Winter is a slower time performance-wise! I do have a show on November 29th (Comedy is Queer at Gael’s Public House) and just got added to a crowd work style show on December 6th (Lotawana Brewing).
I’m gearing up to showcase at a conference this weekend, applying to Fringe Festivals, and also writing some material for a new show I hope to produce in the KC Fringe next summer!
As always, thanks for reading!
